At the age of 7, UPSer Ralf Nelissen had his first life-saving surgery. Born with a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot, his first surgery “opened doors to a life of normalcy” for Ralf. “But, at age 40, a new challenge emerged – a ventricle rhythm issue, led me to a second operation. And that’s when I got my first ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator). The device is about the size of a lighter and protects me if a ventricle heart rhythm problem occurs. “Now, I’m dependent on this pacemaker, so my heart rhythm remains steady. People say they have a guardian angel on their shoulder – but mine is implanted under my left shoulder. What’s brown, small and an innovative approach to sustainability? It’s the new micro hub in the city of Cambridge, UK. We’ve converted a shipping container to serve as a consolidation and dispatch point for packages bound for the city center. We’ll use three electric-assisted quad cycles, known as eQuads, supporting deliveries typically made by conventional diesel vans. From a smart charging grid for our electric vehicles to electric-assisted delivery walker, the UK has long been a laboratory for our susty innovation. In fact, we’re leading more than 30 projects in European cities that use eQuads and electric bikes.
