Missy Owens is a leader at the intersection of business and government with a deep understanding of their interconnectedness. She has a strategic ability to identify the goals of an organization and the varying ways from policies, to NGOs, multilaterals, and consumers that can be used to achieve said goals. She has worked extensively with industry coalitions and third-party groups to create, organize, and then support policy goals.
Missy is the Director of ESG Policy and Engagement at General Motors. Missy will oversee an expansion of ESG work both internally and externally for GM. Previously, Missy was the Director of Government Relations, Federal and Diplomatic, at The Coca-Cola Company, based in Washington, D.C. There, she focused on developing the Company’s environmental and sustainability policy and engaged with the U.S. Congress and the Administration on those issues. In her previous role with Coke, Missy was based in New York City and focused on partnerships with the United Nations and the New York City-based global stakeholder community and public policy organizations.
Prior to Coke, Missy was at the U.S. Department of Commerce where she served as Chief of Staff to the Deputy Secretary and advisor to the Secretary on all key Department-related matters, including interactions with the business community.
Missy began her work in the Obama Administration at the U.S. Department of Energy as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Secretary where she oversaw the planning and implementation of all of the Secretary’s external engagements. Her experience also includes managing now President Joe Biden’s 2008 Senate campaign, serving as Deputy State Director in Iowa for Biden’s 2008 Presidential run, and managing former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden’s first campaign in 2006.
Missy previously worked in New York City as an attorney at Greenberg Traurig, LLP after serving in the Clinton Administration in the White House and the U.S. Department of State, and in the New York City Office of the Mayor. A native of Delaware, Missy graduated from Georgetown University and Brooklyn Law School.
