Speaker Bio
Daniel “Deak” Roh is the Principal Director for Defense Continuity and Mission Assurance (DC&MA), serving under the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for DC&MA. DC&MA develops plans, policies, and leadership support initiatives to assure the Department can execute its core functions, particularly in the face of asymmetric military threats and severe natural hazards to defense installations and infrastructure. DC&MA also strengthens such oversight by helping the Secretary of Defense and other senior leaders integrate a broad range of threat- and component-specific programs, and by building effective partnerships with other Federal Departments and the private sector to build the resilience of external infrastructure essential to defense operations. Prior to his current position, Deak served as the Director for China Strategy, Economics, and Technology in Indo-Pacific Security Affairs. During this time he focused on implementing the National Defense Strategy’s guidance on the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) as the Department’s pacing challenge, leading the development of the PRC Campaign Guidance, and integrating aspects of PRC competition in technology development and economic issues into day-to-day Defense policy considerations. Deak has worked for multiple administrations in the Office of the Secretary of Defense over the past 23 years, focusing on national security competition with near-peer adversaries, as well as European and Eurasian security and defense issues. Other previous assignments include Director for Irregular Warfare in Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict; Russia Policy Chief, International Security Affairs; Country Director, United Kingdom and Ireland; Country Director, Romania and Bulgaria; and Junior Country Director, Russia. He holds an MA from the Catholic University of America, a BA from the Pennsylvania State University, both in international affairs, and is a graduate of the Department of Defense Executive Leadership Development Program. He is the recipient of the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Exceptional Civilian Service Award with Bronze Palm.
